How to Keep Your WhatsApp Account Safe from Hijacking

WhatsApp is one of the most used messaging apps in the world, which also makes it a common target for scams. The most frequent attack is a fake verification code request, where someone tricks you into sharing the six-digit code that moves the account to their device.

Turn on two-step verification

Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Account, then Two-step verification, and set a six-digit PIN. This PIN is required if your number is ever registered on another phone.

Protect your privacy

Under Settings and then Privacy, limit who can see your last seen, profile photo, and about information. Turn on Silence unknown callers to reduce spam calls.

Warning signs

  • You receive an SMS code you did not request.
  • Friends say they got strange messages from you.
  • WhatsApp logs you out without a clear reason.

If you suspect your account is compromised, contact WhatsApp support right away and inform your contacts through another channel.
